Keeping the Commandments

Richard Thetford

Many people will gladly say “I love Jesus” but do they really mean it? I ask that because Jesus said “if you love me, keep my commandments” (John 14:15). Yet one will say they love Jesus but do not even attempt to keep ALL His commandments that He Himself specified. Therefore, we can conclude from the statement that Jesus made is that if one really does love Jesus then one WILL keep His commandments.

Jesus’ commandments are spiritual, and sent from God (Acts 10:33; 2 Peter 3:2; 2:21). Some worship Jesus in vain, teaching as doctrines the precepts of men (Matthew 15:9). The commandments of Jesus that we are to keep are life long and must be kept until the end of time (1 Timothy 6:14). Yet many are guilty of keeping only part of the commandments of Jesus and continuing to add and subtract from God’s Word (2 John 9; Revelation 22:18-19). Each one of us should strive not only to keep ALL the commandments of Jesus because we love Him, but also because it is our duty to do so (Ecclesiastes 12:13; Luke 17:10). Only those who obey ALL the commandments of Jesus will be able to enter into heaven (Revelation 22:14; Luke 1:6).
